Rose & Flower Care Guide for Dubai's Climate

A dozen roses that thrive in London or Amsterdam can struggle within a day in Dubai — not because the flowers are different, but because the climate is. Between 45°C afternoons, the short dash from an air-conditioned car into an even more air-conditioned villa, and the dry desert air in between, fresh flowers here face a set of conditions that a generic care guide written for a temperate climate simply doesn't cover. This is our full guide to both the universal basics and the UAE-specific adjustments that make the real difference — the same guidance our florists build into the care card that comes with every Blossoms & Bloom arrangement.

Fresh roses kept hydrated to last longer in Dubai's heat

The Basics — Universal Rose & Flower Care

These fundamentals apply anywhere in the world, and they matter just as much in Dubai as they do everywhere else — think of them as the foundation the climate-specific tips below build on.

Cut the Stems at an Angle

Before placing your flowers in water, re-cut each stem about 2–3cm from the bottom using clean, sharp scissors or a knife, at a 45-degree angle. A diagonal cut exposes more surface area for water uptake than a flat cut, and prevents the stem from sitting flush against the base of the vase, which can seal it off from water entirely.

Change the Water Every 2–3 Days

Fresh water every two to three days keeps bacteria from building up, which is one of the biggest causes of a bouquet fading early. When you change the water, give the vase a quick rinse too, and re-cut the stems slightly each time.

Use the Flower Food Provided

The sachet that comes with your arrangement isn't an afterthought — it contains a balanced mix of sugar (food for the bloom), acidifier (to keep the water at the right pH) and an antibacterial agent. Mix it exactly as directed on the packet; more is not better; and add a fresh sachet each time you change the water.

Remove Any Leaves Below the Waterline

Any foliage that sits underwater will decompose and speed up bacterial growth, clouding the water and shortening the life of the whole arrangement. Strip these leaves away as soon as you unwrap your flowers, and check again each time you top up or change the water.

Why Dubai's Climate Is Different

Care guides written for cooler climates assume a fairly stable indoor and outdoor temperature, moderate humidity, and gentle light. Dubai offers none of these. Outdoor temperatures can swing from a cool, air-conditioned interior to well over 40°C within seconds, humidity is often low despite the coastal setting (especially inland and in air-conditioned buildings), and direct sun through glass is intense enough to heat a room measurably. Flowers respond to all of this — heat accelerates the opening and wilting of blooms, dry air draws moisture out of petals faster than the stem can replace it, and sudden temperature swings shock the flower in ways a stable climate never would. None of this means fresh flowers are a poor choice in the UAE — it just means a few extra precautions go a long way.

Climate Challenges & Practical Fixes

Extreme Outdoor Heat During Transport & Delivery

The short journey from a delivery van to your front door, or from our studio to your car, is often the harshest few minutes a bouquet experiences. Heat causes blooms to open and soften far faster than they would indoors. If you're collecting flowers yourself or transporting them between locations, keep the car's air conditioning running, avoid leaving flowers in a parked car even briefly, and carry them wrapped rather than exposed to direct sun through a windscreen. Once your flowers arrive, unwrap them and get them into water as soon as possible rather than leaving them boxed on a countertop.

Strong Air-Conditioning Drafts Indoors

It feels counterintuitive, but a vase placed directly under or in front of an AC vent isn't doing your flowers any favours. Constant cold, dry airflow dehydrates petals and can cause them to droop or brown at the edges well before their time, much like a cold draft would stress a houseplant. Position your arrangement somewhere it gets ambient room temperature rather than a direct blast of conditioned air — a console table or sideboard away from the vent is usually a safer spot than one positioned right beneath it.

Low Humidity

Indoor air conditioning strips humidity out of a room, and petals lose moisture to dry air faster than the stem can resupply it through the water. A light misting of the petals (not the flower food water) every day or two helps counter this, particularly for varieties like hydrangeas and roses that are more sensitive to dry air.

Direct Sun Through Windows

Dubai's light is strong even through glass, and a windowsill that looks like a lovely display spot can quietly heat the water in the vase and accelerate wilting. Choose a spot with bright, indirect light instead — enough to appreciate the arrangement, but out of the direct path of sun for sustained periods during the day.

Dust

Fine dust is a fact of life in the UAE, and it settles on petals and foliage just as it does on furniture. A gentle wipe of any dust from leaves with a soft, slightly damp cloth keeps the arrangement looking fresh and can help the plant "breathe" a little better, since a heavy layer of dust on foliage can interfere with the natural pores flowers use to manage moisture.

How Long Should Your Flowers Last?

With the care above and the guide included with every order, a fresh Blossoms & Bloom arrangement typically lasts 5–10 days, depending on the variety and the conditions it's kept in. Roses, in particular, reward the extra attention in our climate — a stem kept away from AC vents and direct sun, with regular water changes, will consistently outlast one left on a sunny windowsill.

Want Something That Skips All of This? Try a Forever Rose

If you love the idea of a rose without the maintenance, our Forever Roses collection is worth a look. These are real roses, preserved rather than freshly cut, and they last up to a year with no water needed at all — no re-cutting stems, no worrying about AC vents or sunlight, no changing water. They're a popular choice for anyone who wants the elegance of a rose without the upkeep, or as a lasting companion piece alongside a fresh bouquet.

Every flower behaves a little differently, and the tips above are a solid starting point rather than the final word. Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the water?

Every 2–3 days, refreshing the flower food sachet each time and giving the stems a fresh diagonal cut.

Is tap water in Dubai safe to use for flowers?

Yes — ordinary tap water is fine for fresh flowers. Just make sure it's at room temperature rather than very cold or very hot, and always mix in the provided flower food.

Should I keep flowers in the fridge overnight?

It isn't necessary for most home arrangements, though keeping flowers in the coolest part of the room overnight — away from AC vents — helps in the same way.

Do preserved roses need any of this care?

No. Forever Roses need no water, no sunlight management and no stem maintenance at all — that's the appeal.
